Welcome to the Faculty & Staff Community!

Welcome to UConnect — a resource designed to help you support student success through career exploration, experiential learning, and professional development. This community offers tools, insights, and collaboration opportunities to enhance your role in preparing students for life beyond the classroom.

We are excited to collaborate with you in helping students make career decisions and search for jobs and internships. You can make a huge difference in preparing students for their first flight beyond the nest!

Enhance the career readiness of your students by inviting Career Development Services to visit your class or group. Each interactive presentation helps students make progress toward specific career goals. Presentations are tailored to your class or group and can be customized for a specific major, industry, or student organization. Please request a presentation here and a representative from our office will reach out to you.

Whether you teach a first-year seminar or a senior capstone course, a career readiness course assignment can make a lasting impact on your students. We are happy to help you with designing a meaningful course assignment or CANVAS module to further your students’ professional development.

These are some of the assignments we’ve helped develop and support:

An experience interviewing in a safe environment is what we aim for when assigning students a mock interview to complete for a class assignment.  Whether the student has a one on one with a Career Advisor, or in a classroom setting with their peers, or practices using an AI technology called Quinncia, Career Development Services would like to partner with you to make this experience the best it can be.

Resume Reviews are our most popular appointment type, and it is often because of the great work faculty do with encouraging their students to bring their resumes to us. We’ve also made it simple for you to integrate this step into your course as an assignment or extra credit. Each semester we hire and train Student Peer Career Advisors who specialize in assisting students with getting the basic formatting and principles of resume development down. Having your students meet with one of them prior to submitting a final resume for your class assignment can be a great way to increase the quality of the work you receive. If you provide us with your course roster, we can also quickly confirm whether your students completed the review with our office during the specific time frame. Due to high demand and scheduling, we ask that you please coordinate with our office in advance of setting assignment deadlines.

Additionally, we have a new AI technology called Quinncia, where students can upload their resumes to get an AI critique.

With almost 80% of jobs being found through word of mouth, it is imperative that students develop strong networking skills. Adding an Elevator Pitch assignment to your course can be a great way to help students master this important networking tool. We’ve developed different versions of this assignment over the years, so we feel confident that we could find a method to work with your teaching style.

We love it when faculty encourage their classes to attend one of our career events; however, we’ve found that students often need a little more guidance to get the most impact out of this type of attendance. Instead of offering your students extra credit to just attend the fair, consider adding another step to the attendance. Here are a few ideas we’ve seen great success with in the past:

  • Ask students to talk to two different employers at the career fair in the industries they are considering for their future career. Provide them some guiding questions such as “How did you get into this field,” “What is your favorite part of your industry,” or “What is a day in the life of a typical employee at this company.” After collecting the information from the fair, students can then share with other students on an online discussion board what they learned from their mini-informational interview.
  • Ask students to bring you the business cards of three different employers they talked to at the event.
  • Have students submit a one-page reflection on how they felt they did networking at the career fair. They can include things such as how they felt delivering their elevator pitch, what questions they asked or wished they would have asked, or how they selected the employers they wanted to talk to.

The Career Champions program aims to provide faculty, staff, and administrators with an opportunity to learn how to best support students in becoming career ready. By completing our interactive training and joining this engaging group, you will gain access to additional support and resources.
