Many questions may enter your mind when preparing to enter a networking or interviewing space: Is my resume ready? How am I going to introduce myself? Will I be able to navigate these (sometimes awkward) conversations? And of course, what am I going to wear?!
You’ve probably heard, “Look good, feel good,” and “dress for the job you want, not the job you have” during lectures about the importance of dressing professionally. However, there never seems to be any conversation around the why and how of professional dress. Why am I going to be judged for the clothing I’m wearing, and how am I expected to afford professional attire when I don’t even have a job yet?
Let’s begin by exploring the Why: the first impression you make on an employer will set the tone for the entirety of your hiring process. Your first impression includes elements such as your handshake, enthusiasm, body language, and of course, what you’re wearing. Thus, it’s essential to project professionalism. Most of all, it shows the employer that you care about the position you’re interviewing for-you’re serious about landing this role and you’re intentional with how you present yourself throughout the process. Additionally, your confidence will resonate with employers. You should dress in a way that makes you feel confident and comfortable in the professional space you’re entering. For example, if you don’t normally wear heels and don’t feel comfortable in them, don’t feel like you have to wear them to the career fair! Instead, choose a pair of flats that will allow you to walk through the space with comfort and confidence.
The interview is a necessary part of the job and internship search process. It’s crucial to present yourself in your most professional manner and adhere to standards of proper interviewing attire while still remaining confident and comfortable in your outfit.
